How it fits into a pattern
Patterns often give an expected stitch count at the end of a row or round. A stitch counter helps you reach or check that number. It is not a replacement for counting the physical loops: it records what you believe you made, so a mismatch still needs to be investigated.
Separate the count from the row
If you are tracking both, label them clearly. “Row 6, 24 stitches” is different from “24 rows.” A note or project workspace that shows both values can prevent a very common mix-up.
