Keep the file and progress together
The safest setup is a project record that contains the PDF, the current page, the row or round, and any personal notes. If those details are split between a PDF viewer, a notes app, and a physical clicker, switching projects makes it easier to lose the connection.
Useful PDF checkpoints
Record the page number, the pattern section, and the current repeat. If a page contains several blocks of instructions, name the block as well. Avoid drawing over small symbols or abbreviations; a short note outside the instruction is easier to reverse.
Using SkeinHub

Keep a backup
Only upload patterns you have permission to use, and keep a personal copy of important files. A project app can make a pattern easier to follow, but it should not be the only copy of an irreplaceable document.
